Apple gift cards explained: how they work and how to use them in Ghana

Kwame's niece in Kumasi wanted a game for her birthday. He bought an Apple Gift Card, sent her the code on WhatsApp, and waited for the thank-you message. What came instead was a screenshot: the App Store saying the code could not be redeemed.

Nothing was wrong with the card. It was a US card, and her Apple Account was set to Ghana. That single detail decides whether an Apple Gift Card works, and it is worth understanding before you buy one.

The one thing to know

The Apple Gift Cards iVillage sells are US cards. They can only be redeemed on an Apple Account whose country or region is the United States.

Apple Gift Cards are tied to the country they were issued for. A US card adds US dollars to a US Apple Account balance, and that balance is spent in the US App Store and the US Apple online store. An Apple Account set to Ghana, or to any other country, cannot redeem it. The code is not faulty and it is not a scam; the two simply do not match.

So before you buy, check the account the card is for:

1. On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings, tap your name, then Media & Purchases, then View Account.
2. Look at Country/Region.

If it says United States, a US gift card will work. If it says anything else, it will not, and we would rather you knew that now than after the code has been sent.

We do not give advice on changing an account's region to make a card fit. Apple sets its own rules on regions and payment, and whether any change is possible or sensible for your account is between you and Apple.

What a US Apple Gift Card buys

According to Apple, an Apple Account balance in the US can be spent on:

• Apps and games from the App Store, including in-app purchases
• Subscriptions such as Apple Music, Apple Arcade, Apple TV and iCloud+ storage
• Many third-party app subscriptions billed through the App Store
• Films, music and books from the Apple TV app, the iTunes Store and Apple Books
• Apple hardware and accessories bought from Apple in the United States

There are limits. You cannot use a balance to buy another gift card or to send a gift, and Apple notes that some subscriptions cannot be charged to an account balance. Everything is in US dollars and stays inside Apple's US stores.

For most of our customers, the practical use is keeping a US Apple Account topped up for apps, iCloud+ and Apple Music without needing a US bank card.

How you receive it from us

An Apple Gift Card from iVillage is a code, not a plastic card. There is no delivery rider and no parcel.

1. You place the order and it is checked by a person on our team, as every order is.
2. Once the order is accepted and paid, we email the code to the address on the order.
3. You redeem it yourself on the US account.

Codes are issued by hand after payment clears, so allow a short wait rather than expecting it the second you pay. You can pay by card or Mobile Money through Paystack, and the charge will show as Kality Ltd, the company behind iVillage Africa.

How to redeem it

On an iPhone or iPad:

1. Open the App Store.
2. Tap your photo or initials at the top of the screen.
3. Tap Redeem Gift Card or Code.
4. Enter the code by hand, or use the camera if the option is offered.

On a Mac, open the App Store, click your name at the bottom of the sidebar, then Redeem Gift Card. The balance appears in your account straight away and is used before any other payment method for eligible purchases.

Keep the code private

An Apple Gift Card code works like cash. Whoever enters it first gets the money, and once it has been redeemed it cannot be taken back.

• Do not post the code, or a photo of it, anywhere public.
• If you are sending it as a gift, send it only to the person it is for, directly.
• Be wary of anyone who asks you to pay them with Apple Gift Card codes. Government offices, utility companies, landlords and banks never ask to be paid that way; such requests are a well-known scam.

Because a code can be used the moment it is seen, gift card codes cannot be returned, refunded or exchanged once we have issued them. That is also why we ask you to check the account region first.

A good gift, if it fits

For someone who already uses a US Apple Account, a gift card is a thoughtful present: an album, a few months of iCloud+ storage, or a game they have been waiting for. For someone whose account is set to Ghana, it is the wrong gift, however kindly meant.
