iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max: which one is right for you?

Hold both phones for ten seconds and most people already know. One sits in the palm and disappears into a trouser pocket. The other feels like a small, beautiful slab of glass that wants a bag. Neither feeling is wrong. The question is which one you will still be happy with in two years, when the novelty has gone and it is simply the thing you reach for sixty times a day.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max went on sale on 18 September 2026. Apple has made choosing between them easier than it used to be, because almost everything that matters is identical.

What is exactly the same

Start here, because it removes a lot of worry.

• The chip. Both run the A20 Pro, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine. The smaller phone is not a slower phone.
• The cameras. There is no camera difference this year. Both have the 48MP Fusion Main camera with a variable aperture (from ƒ/1.48 to ƒ/4.0), a 48MP Ultra Wide and a 48MP 4x Telephoto that also gives optical-quality 8x shots. If you buy the Max "for the better camera", you are paying for something else.
• Storage. Both come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB.
• The screen technology. Both have Super Retina XDR OLED with ProMotion up to 120Hz, Always-On, a smaller Dynamic Island and up to 3000 nits outdoors, which you will appreciate at a noon trotro stop.
• Thickness. Both are 8.75 mm thick. Colours match too.

What is different

Three things, and they are linked.

Size. The Pro has a 6.3-inch display and measures about 150 mm tall and 71.9 mm wide. The Pro Max has a 6.9-inch display and measures about 163.4 mm by 78 mm. Those six millimetres of width are what your thumb notices when you try to reach the top corner one-handed.

Weight. The Pro weighs 211 g. The Pro Max weighs 249 g. Thirty-eight grams sounds like nothing until you are lying in bed reading on it at midnight.

Battery. This is where the Max earns its size. Apple rates the Pro Max for up to 45 hours of video playback, the longest of any iPhone so far, against up to 36 hours for the Pro. Streamed video is up to 40 hours versus 33. Both fast-charge to 50% in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter.

A day in Accra with each

Picture Ama, who runs a small catering business from East Legon. Her phone is her order book, her WhatsApp shopfront, her Mobile Money wallet and her camera for every tray of jollof she posts. She leaves home at six, is in traffic on the Spintex Road by seven, and does not see a charger she trusts until evening. On a day with an outage at the event venue, the Max's extra nine hours of rated playback is the difference between a phone at 20% at 9pm and a phone that died at 6. For her, the weight is a fair trade.

Now picture Kojo, a banker who sits near a desk charger all day and a car charger all evening. He wants the best camera for his children's football on Saturdays and a phone that fits his suit pocket. The Pro gives him every camera feature the Max has, in a body he forgets he is carrying.

Who each one suits

Choose iPhone 18 Pro if:

• you use your phone one-handed a lot, on a bike or on a busy trotro;
• you carry it in a pocket rather than a bag;
• you can charge at some point during the day;
• you have smaller hands, or you simply prefer a lighter phone.

Choose iPhone 18 Pro Max if:

• battery life is the thing you complain about most;
• you are away from reliable power for long stretches, or dumsor is a regular guest;
• you watch a lot of video, edit photos on the phone or read long documents;
• your phone is your main screen, and a laptop only comes out occasionally.

If you are torn, ask yourself one honest question: in the last month, did your phone die before you got home? If yes, the Max. If no, the Pro is probably all the phone you need, in a smaller shape.

A word on SIMs

Apple's own iPhone 18 Pro models in the United States are eSIM-only, and our iPhones are US eSIM models as standard. For many people in Ghana that works well, since the networks here can issue eSIMs. If you would rather keep a physical SIM card, most of our iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max options can also be ordered as a Physical SIM version, which costs more.
