Wyze was founded in 2017 by former Amazon employees on a simple observation: smart home hardware was priced far above what it cost to make. Its first camera launched at twenty dollars and the company grew almost entirely by word of mouth.

It now makes cameras, doorbells, locks, scales, sensors, lighting and watches — and, unusually for the category, it does not require a subscription to use the basics.
