Mario, Zelda, and the eShop.

Nintendo was founded in 1889 making playing cards, and has been making video games since before most consoles existed. It owns the characters — Mario, Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong, Animal Crossing — that people who never play games still know by name.

Its habit is to sidestep the specification race entirely: the DS, the Wii and the Switch all won by being a different idea rather than a faster one.
