PS5 or PS5 Slim: which console makes sense in Ghana?

Ask around any barbering shop in Madina and someone will have an opinion on this. One friend swears by discs because he trades FIFA for Call of Duty every few months. Another went digital and says he will never go back. Both are right, for their own reasons, and that is the whole point of this guide.

Sony now makes several versions of the PlayStation 5. They all play the same games. The differences are in how you get those games, how much you can store and how the console lives in your room.

The four consoles, briefly

• PlayStation 5 (original). The first model, launched in 2020. Large, with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive built in and an 825 GB SSD. See it here.
• PlayStation 5 Slim. Released in November 2023, it replaced the original. Noticeably smaller and lighter, with 1 TB of storage. The disc drive is a detachable unit rather than part of the body. See it here.
• PlayStation 5 Digital Edition. The slim design with no disc drive at all. Every game is downloaded. See it here.
• PlayStation 5 Pro. Released on 7 November 2024. A faster graphics engine, Sony's PSSR upscaling for sharper images, and a 2 TB SSD. It has no disc drive in the box; Sony sells one separately. See it here.

Disc or digital: the Ghana question

In many countries, going digital is an easy call. Here, three things make it worth thinking through.

Data. Modern games are huge, often 50 to 100 GB and more, before updates. On a fibre line at home that is an overnight download. On mobile data bundles it is a serious expense, every single time. Even with a disc, games still pull updates, but a disc gives you most of the game without the download.

Swapping and resale. Ghana has a lively culture of lending, swapping and reselling game discs among friends and on WhatsApp groups. A disc you finished last month can become part of the price of the next one. Digital games are tied to your PlayStation account. You cannot sell them or pass them on.

Where you shop. Digital games are bought on the PlayStation Store, which is tied to your account's region. More on that below.

If you have steady home internet and mostly buy new releases, digital is tidy and convenient. If you rely on data bundles, or like to trade games, a disc drive pays for itself quickly.

Original or Slim?

For most people the Slim is the better choice. It is smaller, which matters on a crowded TV stand, and it has more storage than the original. Its detachable drive also means that if you ever do go fully digital, the console does not change shape.

The original still has fans. Its large body moves air well, and some people simply prefer its looks. Both are quiet in normal use. Whichever you pick, give it room: keep at least a hand's width of space around the vents, and do not box it into a closed cabinet. In a warm Accra living room without air conditioning, airflow matters more than which model you chose.

Is the Pro worth it?

The Pro is for people with a good 4K television who notice the difference between smooth and very smooth. Games that support its enhancements look sharper and hold their frame rates better. On a 1080p screen, or for someone who plays a couple of hours on weekends, the extra spend is hard to justify.

Remember that the Pro has no disc drive in the box. If discs matter to you, budget for the add-on drive.

Storage fills faster than you think

Whatever you buy, some of the SSD is taken by the system. Three or four large games can fill an 825 GB console. Every PS5 has an M.2 expansion slot for an extra SSD, and you can play older PS4 games from a USB drive. If you tend to keep many games installed, the Slim's 1 TB or the Pro's 2 TB saves you some juggling.

Power: protect it

Our power can drop and come back hard. A PS5 that loses power mid-write can corrupt data, and a surge can do worse. Plug it into a good surge protector at the very least, and consider a small UPS so it can shut down properly when the lights go. We cover this in detail in our guide to power surges.

Accounts, PS Plus and gift cards

Every PlayStation console works in Ghana. The question is the account.

PlayStation Store and PlayStation Plus are organised by region, and a gift card only works on an account from the same country. The PlayStation Store gift cards we sell are US cards. They only work on a US PlayStation account. They will not add funds to an account set up in another country, and the region of an account cannot simply be switched later.

So decide early. If you plan to top up with US cards, create a US account when you set up the console. If you already have years of games on another region's account, keep it and top up in ways that work for that region.

The short version

• Steady fibre and you buy new games: Digital Edition or Slim.
• Data bundles, or you like to swap and resell: Slim with its disc drive.
• A good 4K TV and you care about image quality: Pro, with the add-on drive if you want discs.
